Have you ever set out on a journey without having a destination in mind?
I may not have done so on a road trip, but sometimes, especially on walks around my neighborhood or neighborhoods wherever and whenever I am visiting a new place, I often just go wherever my feet take me.
Sometimes, we don’t know where we are headed, but we set out on an adventure regardless. Whether that is a road trip, a walk around the block, a hike in a new area, an entire vacation or just a journey flipping through the pages of book, it’s an adventure nevertheless.
One example of such an adventure, from the other half’s favorite movie, is this:
“It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark… and we’re wearing sunglasses.”
“Hit it.”
~ Elwood and Jake, Blues Brothers
Life is one of my most favorite adventures. We can’t see the ending of our own story, but we continue to write it each and every day. And when we take a look back at the story of life we have each written, we see all the adventures we have had and how they fit into our stories. Each has taught us, shaped us, defined us, even for just a moment. We see where our stories intersected with others’ stories and where they were written out of our chapters. We see the adventure that has brought us to this particular chapter of our story.
We learn, We love. We exude joy. We bring peace. We find hope. We shower magic. All of this while we take the road less traveled, the second fork in the road. All while wondering “What if we make the wrong decisions? What if I was meant to go another way?” But yet, the journey continues. Our lives continue. Our story keeps getting written.
Perhaps we… perhaps I don’t know where I am going to go. Perhaps the adventures I am meant for will take me another way. But at the moment, I am grateful for where I am. As I look back on my own story and see all of my adventures, all of the chapters I have written, both metaphorically and quite literally, I am grateful for where I have been and am thankful for what I have done. There’s magic in those pages. There is love, and hope, and peace, and a great deal of joy. And I will keep on writing that story as I continue to pen the stories that swim in my head.
I hope all of you can do the same.

I typically have a destination in mind when I head out on an adventure, I’m too much of a planner not to, lol. However, en route from my parent’s place up north to home, we would take a different paths depending on the day and our available time. When my boys were young, I’d throw them the Wisconsin map, tell them to find a major intersection we were approaching and to map us home. We saw some interesting small towns that way, they learned map reading skills, and not once did we end up in Lake Michigan! ๐๐๐
