It’s usually something simple, like forgetting to clock out one night at your place of employment or thinking you’ve replied to an email and text when you did so only in your head. It could be something major, like not test-running a project one last time before giving it the green light or sending a message intended for just for your friends to the whole office pool.
Mistakes were made.
Like most people, I don’t like to make mistakes. Part of that reason is because I am such a perfectionist. Another part of the reason is I was teased so badly by some for some of my mistakes that I have learned to try to avoid making any, at all costs.
On the flip side, having siblings myself, I know I have teased others for mistakes and try not to any more. I know what mental damage it can do, constantly having to hear teasing for your mistakes. So I do try my best now that I am a adult to tell people it’s okay if they mess up. We are all human. We all make mistakes.
Mistakes are how we learn things though. If I didn’t misspell words, I would never learn the correct ways to spell them. I didn’t learn to ride a bike with handbrakes instead of coaster without running into the neighbor’s rosebushes a few times because I forgot and tried to pedal backwards to stop. I learned how to do things correctly because I made mistakes and others took the time to correct my mistakes.
“We’ve been conditioned to not make mistakes…But I can’t live that way.”
~ Natasha Bedingfield “Unwritten”
From misspelled words to singing the wrong lyrics to a song, we all make mistakes in life. We move on and learn from the mistakes as best as we can, if we are lucky. Sometimes, we need to keep making mistakes before it sinks in. And owning those mistakes and apologizing for them is as essential as learning from them.
Failures shouldn’t define us. We don’t have to make them a part of who we are, but we need to learn that it’s okay to make mistakes. It is all part of life. It’s part of the chapters of our stories, the magic we make every day.
Learn to make mistakes.
Learn from those mistakes.
Own those mistakes.
Stay magical.
Write your own story.

It’s through our mistakes that we learn. Thanks for this reminder that we can and should allow ourselves to make mistakes and give others grace and understanding when they do. ๐

Wonderful reminder! ๐๐๐ This week I had someone ‘fess up’ that something they did was making a project I was doing much harder. I appreciated them telling me, and understand their reasons why they did things this way….and now I’m able to work around it much easier. Not always easy to take responsibility for your mistakes, but its how we learn for sure!
