The Magician

For National Novel Writing Month 2022, I wrote a story called The Magician. I completed over 50,000 words for the project, logging 52,583 words. I even posted a sample chapter of the work on this blog as a post in early November, 2022 – that blog post has been since edited to remove the chapter.

I got a great deal of WONDERFUL feedback for it. I was thinking of working the manuscript and possibly publishing it as a novel. But it doesn’t work as well as a novel as does my Portals Series. The style that it was written in sings to me more like a serial would read. So I looked for an avenue to publish it. I found a few, but I liked none.

That being said, the story will be available here, on this author site, as a FREE story, for whomever would like to read it. So here is my story, in its full glory. As each chapter is released as a blog post, I will post it here. The hope is to post one chapter every other week for your reading pleasure. Feedback is ALWAYS welcome. Corrections are welcome as well, but keep in mind I reserve the right to use my own discretion. Comments are enabled on this page as well.

Each chapter will be linked to the next as they are released. All of them will link back to this page as well. You can find them by scrolling down. As of 23 October 2023, the podcaster M. Ray Davis, will be recording the chapters on his podcast – the chapters with audio will be noted and links will also be available.

An extraordinary performer with a checkered past, Ignace Godding has spent the better part of three decades bound to a magical contract he cannot sever. Enslaved alongside others by a magic stronger than his own, he cannot break the bonds that ensnare him any more than he can mend the bridges he had burned in his youth.

A spirited postgraduate studying the history of the magic she was born with, Vanessa Rankin has her own sad chronicles to deal with. She wishes to break free of her influential family and learn her own ways as she finishes her master’s degree. She also wishes to find a way to end the strong curses that haunt her magical familial lines as she attempts to move on from the sadness that haunts her.

When chance brings the two of them together in the windy city of Allium, both magicians both must find a way to break the bonds and the curses. But can the past, as well as the present, hold the key to healing the sadness they each possess? And can they learn to trust each other enough to heal from their own tragedies?

I was sent this blog post from a reading friend and thought I should also include it here for anyone who is wondering why I do serial novels and what the point of them is:
