Just breathe

A couple weeks ago, I had a very crazy day at the full time job. The hustles and bustles of the job left me feeling like my head was spinning. I paused for a brief minute when I had the moment to get a long and much needed drink of water and calm the spinning in my head when I heard a huff and someone mention that it must be nice to “rest” on the clock.

I immediately stopped the break and jumped back into the action, even though there wasn’t anything I needed to do at that moment, feeling needlessly guilty for taking a moment to collect my thoughts because of that throwaway comment. But later, when I actually had a second to process it, I shouldn’t have felt guilty. That momentary breather was needed too and I should have embraced it. But the voices of the past and the snide comment made in that moment both left indelible marks on my own mentality that I can’t rest, even though it was needed.

Let that sink in. Rest is needed too.

Sometimes we think we are taking a breather. But in actuality, we are thinking and remembering that we have a list a mile long of things that need to be done and checked off. We have responsibilities and chores. We have lives to care about and people we need to contact. We even have things we want to do. Time is money and time is finite. And when we do finally have that moment to ourselves, we also have to deal with the silent cries about how lazy and unproductive that we are. We are worthless because again, that time is money and we are just wasting it by not doing anything. We feel guilty for taking this moment to ourselves.

But we need that breather. We need that moment to just find the calm reset.

I have had a crazy year so far. My days when I am not at the full time job are filled with chores, geocaching and hiking adventures, and writing endeavors. But I am learning that even in these moments, taking a small break and just learning to breathe is needed to find the magic in the moments. And it’s those moments of reset that keep me going.

it’s pausing to take in a vista on a hike, noting and admiring the details as three long breaths in and out are taken. It’s tapping back into the creativity that once flowed. It’s in rebuilding the connections that once allowed magic to be seen. It’s ignoring the world, even for a moment, to enjoy the calm of a breeze. It’s in shutting out the noise to find one’s own voice. It’s in decompressing in the silence of the car in the garage for a few moments after a long day of work. It’s in enjoying a snack by a babbling body of water. And it’s in a minute in between the crazy of a job to take a long drink of water.

Just breathe.

It’s important to our own stories. So don’t feel so guilty taking that moment.
