It’s been a weird couple of weeks here in my little swath of the Midwest. We’ve gone from highs in the 60s, 70s, and quite possibly even 80s here this weekend to having a blizzard last weekend and then sub-zero wind chills. It’s been a roller-coaster of a few weeks and hopefully, we will get back to some semblance of normal March chilly but not too cold weather once Mother Nature or Old Man Winter or whomever stops saying “Hold my beer! I can give Iowa all four seasons in less than a week!!”
Could whomever is holding that beer please pour it out??????
The weather isn’t the only thing acting like a yo-yo. Life usually does too. Just when I think I am on a straight path and making some headway on something, a curveball is tossed my way that knocks me off the path. It’s funny how life works out that way. Our microwave quit working in the middle of making my dinner one night and had to be replaced. The check engine light on my old vehicle popped on again. I was yelled at for things I can’t control. Another elderly friend suddenly passed away. A childhood friend just had emergency surgery (he’s okay though!) Other people in my circle have experienced heartbreaks that have made me cry for them. Things are making it difficult for me to get a decent night’s sleep. And just when I think I am on top of things, the yo-yo flicks down once more and I find myself at the end of my rope.
But then, things look up too and I find myself at the top of the coaster metaphorically speaking too. I have had adventures that made me feel awesome. Friends and I trekked across the state to find the oldest geocache in Iowa. The random streak of finding one geocache a day has continued and will continue until at least the one year mark if I can stretch it that far. I’ve been making progress on the next few stories in my Portals Series and trying to write even when I don’t feel inspired. The other half and I will be celebrating a milestone dating anniversary next month. And next week, I have a few day break from the full time job to focus on one of my favorite hobbies as a geocaching convention comes to this little swath of the Midwest.

It’s easy to focus on only the bad things that happen in life… the repair bills, the medical issues, the events that can’t be controlled, the things that loom larger than life. But life is like a yo-yo or a roller-coaster. There are ups and downs. There are bad moments, but there are also silver linings. That strange blizzard we had last Sunday allowed me to get some things done around my little abode I would have put off. The car needing repaired means I actually have a vehicle to drive (and even the means to get it repaired.) The adventures I had to cancel just means other ones to find. I’ve reconnected with a few friends and family members over losses and fears and events. I get to say I climbed DOWN a bluff to find a silly little ammo can in the middle of a state park in winter. The stories I am writing are continuing to evolve, just as I am. I got to watch a river of birds across the sky over my abode last night.
That weird roller-coaster called weather means we just take Mother Nature for granted. It’s one of the reasons why I write the character of Eathelin the Bearer of Nature in my stories to be so capricious and fickle…. She’s NATURE after all.
But then, you’d have to read my books to discover that!
Yo-yos travel down, yes. But they also travel up. And it’s learning to ride on the yo-yo called life that is the trick. There is some peace in those silver linings. There is hope even when you’re traveling downward. There is joy in the ups. There’s a whole lot of love no matter what. And in every moment, there is also magic in the writing.
Stay magical, friends.
