May the Force be with you

I’m not much of a Star Wars fan. I’ve watched some of the movies multiple times (mainly the original trilogy since, well, I am a child of the 80s) and have seen a few of the other things. But I am not a diehard fan like some of my friends and family members are.

That being said, I do appreciate the jokes that have come from the fandom. I appreciate the fan fiction head cannon, the stories, the ideas, and everything else that comes from the entire experience. I laugh at how it’s all just “hokey religion” and missed shots. I enjoy the “May the Fourth” and “Revenge of the Fifth” and all that the mythos has evolved into. Yes, it’s just a fantasy wrapped up in science fiction, but it is a story nevertheless.

And yes, like all of the various fandoms, there is an escape from reality. But life isn’t just about living in “the real world.” We need the fairy tales the heroics, the imaginations and fantasy that make life worth living. We need to walk along the journey with our heroes, whether that be Luke Skywalker trying to bring back balance to the Force, a hobbit taking the One Ring to Mount Doom, the USS Enterprise exploring the final frontier, a trio of wizards searching for horcruxes, the Guardians and Avengers taking on the latest villain to threaten existence….. we all experience that idea that the forces of good will win in the end over evil. And as we go along that journey, we experience all of the trials and tribulations that come in the “real world” along side the fantasy.

But we are transformed by the journey as well. We become connected to others through these stories. We learn that there is hope and joy, peace and love, light and magic along the way.

Yes, there is always going to be evil out there. Every fandom reminds us that while we defeat one bad guy, there is always something else waiting and lurking on the horizon for us to face. But yet, we persist in fighting against it. It’s part of our story, just as it is a part of every story.

So whether we are battling against a Death Star, a Dark Lord, the Borg, an alien invader, the villain of the week, or just the plain forces of hate that still permeate our world, may we find that we are forces of good, just as the heroes we look up to are.

Be a force of love.

Be a force of peace.

Be a force of joy.

Be a force of hope.

Be a force of light.

May the Force be with you.

Stay magical, friends. Write your own story.

  1. Will said and we all need a place to go to get away from the real world, where can get loss in a good story or movie.
