So you’re one of THOSE “Christians”!

If you’ve followed my blog or any of my social medias, then this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

I am a church-going, Jesus-following, God-loving Christian.

Yet, in the past few months, I have been called un-Christian. I have been told I don’t go to a “Bible-believing church” because my church voted to be Open and Affirming back in June and are living that kind of life now. I have been called names because of what I believe, ranging from “snowflake” to “socialist” and even “heretic” for just being me.

It all stems from a mantra that I was taught in my adolescent years:

Treat EVERYONE as a Child of God

And so, I did. Or at least, I have tried to ever since. I have accepted the foreigner, no matter what their documentation. I have accepted my sisters and brothers who are part of the LGTBQIA+ continuum. I embrace the downtrodden as best as I can, offer help to the poor even if others think they are taking advantage, be a friend to the friendless as best as I can. But yet, I am one of “those kinds of Christians.”

The heathen.

The liberal snowflake.

The sensitive crybaby who wears her heart on her sleeve.

The one who should only post stupid memes and funny stories and unicorn photos and leave the biblical discussions to those who don’t have their heads in the clouds and just know their way is correct.

But is it?

I have been told I am going to hell because I look at the translations of the Bible that “clearly state” one thing and realize that perhaps it doesn’t clearly state anything of the sort. As someone who speaks two other languages with some degree of fluency and has a degree from a Bible college, even I know there are nuances that are missed when translating from one language to another. Context has to be given. And agendas of translators have to come to play.

And yes, I have read the Bible cover to cover multiple times. And I don’t agree with every word in there because of the previous paragraph. But I do believe that it’s a guidebook to living a life that can be very Christ-like.

I have been told I am not the right kind of Christian because I believe firmly in the separation of church and state. I have been told I know nothing because i believe in the fact that there isn’t a war on Christmas except in the eyes of a few who can’t seem to understand that the term holiday literally means “holy day” and that in which wishing someone a “Happy Holidays” is accepting all people, no matter what they celebrate or don’t celebrate. And I am perfectly fine with being wished the same or whatever glad tidings someone wants to use.

I am one of those kinds of Christians.

The one who tries not to judge others, lest I be judged myself.

The one who loves my neighbor as myself, even when I can’t stand them.

The one who knows we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory, but it is by grace and faith that we are saved and I try not to call out the speck in someone else’s eye because I have logs in my own.

But that’s not very “Christian-like” to some. It’s unorthodox. It’s radical. It’s catering to the secular and the worldly. It’s embracing the sinners and the saints alike. It’s…. very much the kind of Christian I am.

Yes, I am one of THOSE Christians.
