Do Unto Others….

We’re nearing the elections here in the United States, and man oh man is this a very polarized election.

It seems no matter where one turns, they are hearing how if they aren’t FOR a certain candidate, then they are against everything that candidate stumps for. The nation feels divided and it seems that disagreement with anything is the only thing we can agree on. The issues that seem to divide us are things that are life or death issues. They shape our core values. . They leaves us feeling like it’s an “us or them” kind of issue.

And forget about compromise. We can’t give a bit to gain a bit. Don’t even think about building that bridge across the gap that might mean we have to give up some of our ground. We can’t take the high road because it means we lose. As a result, it feels like bipartisanship and making sure the greater good for the entire nation is a thing of the past.

Or is it?

The narratives we write are shaped by the issues we hold dear. But in our own self-righteousness to point fingers at others, we miss the fact that we have four fingers pointing back at us, showing us that we are becoming the very things that we hate in others. We lament the “world just ain’t what it used to be” but we don’t try to find the common ground to make it that way. We miss the fact that magic, light, love, hope, peace, and joy exist only because there are some who strive to exude kindness. They exist because the gap was breached.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

The Golden Rule. It doesn’t only exist in the Bible, but is a core tenant of nearly every major religion in the world. But who are these others? Are they “those who look like us and act like us”? Are they those who agree with us?

It would be easy if that were the case. After all, we all are able to be kind to our friends. We are able to be kind to those who think like we do, act like we do, dress like we do. That foreigner who might not be able to speak our language? Impossible. That person who might not adhere to the moral and social norms that we uphold for ourselves? Are you kidding me? It’s more difficult when we have to reach out and bridge the gap, when we have to find the common ground, when we have to… learn another’s story.

Are we doing unto others as we would have them do unto us? Or are we doing unto others BEFORE they can do things to us? Are we acting from hate and detriment, or kindness and love? Are we thinking before we speak, acting from the heart, or tearing each other down? And are we choosing to fight injustice or just fight amongst ourselves?

Do unto others.

It sounds so simple, and yet it is one of the hardest things to ever do.

To be humble. To be kind. To be selfless. To put others first, even those who don’t agree with us. To find the darkness and shine a light to fix it. To find the magic in the stories.

Do unto others. Not as we expect them to do against us, but as we would HOPE to have done for us as well, in LOVE and JOY, so that all of us can have PEACE.

Stay magical, friends.
