Growth

Traditions are great. They connect us to the past. But sometimes, there are traditions that we need to let go of. Cynicism, stagnation, dead weight all keep us from finding our purpose. They keep us from becoming better people. They hold us back and keep us fighting the same battles over and over again, coping with the same fears, the same hatreds, the same old story that by now needs a breath of fresh air and a new light.

Sometimes, we need to let go of what we know and allow it to evolve, embracing a new idea or a new identity.

That’s not to say that we should just forget the past and throw away all of our traditions, but rather take the old and blend it with the new. We can build upon it, planting new seeds amongst the old growth. We can prune away what is dead so that we become stronger and better with these changes.

That is growth.

Changes happen. They are inevitable. Over the course of my nearly forty-four years on this planet, a great deal has changed, just as history will tell us everything changes, though some people just remain stubbornly and impassibly rooted in the old. Book bans, protesting the newest rounds of immigrants, offering prayers and thoughts instead of ways to fix things, complaining about how “the world looks different today than it did yesterday”…. that remains the dead wood on the trees that seek to grow.

We are not the people we were yesterday. We will not be the people tomorrow that we were today. But it is in how we look towards the future and keep ourselves rooted that will keep us growing. It’s in that growth that we continue to find the love, the peace, the hope, the joy and the light that we always strive to find. And that is the magic in this story we write.

Stay magical, dear friends.
