Where There is Love

Anyone who pays attention to the news will tell you that there is so much in the way of hatred in our world today. Look at the way invasions, mass shootings, book ban parties, even comments on social media accounts are perversive.

We make rules against love. We tell people they cannot love others because of their ethnicity, their social class, their gender. We go about telling others what they can and cannot read, wear, do, say, or even think. We spend more time shaming others and tearing them down than we do building up people and making this world a better place.

Why is there so much violence? Why do we seek to divide and tear each other down? Where is the sense of common humanity? Where is the love? What is love?

I know some of you are now singing that famous song by Haddaway in your head. You know, the one made famous by a certain Saturday Night Live sketch?

“Love is the greatest force in the universe. It is the heartbeat of the moral cosmos.”

~ Martin Luther King Jr.

It seems the English language is a bit simplistic when it comes to the word love. I love coffee. I love my husband. I love my family. I love unicorns. The same word is used to mean different kinds of love.

Other languages are a bit more colorful when it comes to the word love.

In Spanish, those same sentences I just typed out read as this. Me gusta el café. Le amo mi marido. Quiero mucho mi familia. Me encantan los unicornios.

C. S. Lewis explains there are four different kinds of love. στοργή (storge) is a familial love, the built in love-bond we have for family members in particular.  φιλία (philia) is a friendship love, the freely chosen love, for it is given to those chosen as kin rather than by blood.  ἔρως (eros) is a romantic love, the “being in love” kind of love where one seeks for a partner. ἀγάπη (agape) is the unconditional love, the charity that exists no matter the circumstances.

All of these loves are important. Where these loves abound, there cannot be hatred. Where there are these loves, relationships grow. Where there is love….. we should be fostering more love in this world, silencing the hatred, the divisions, the ideas that some are less than because of who they are and who they love.

“Love… Love like the world we know is over in a day / I’m gonna show you love in every language / I’m gonna speak with words that need no form / I’m gonna give you what you never had before.”

~ Jars of Clay “Show You Love”

Where there is love, people are accepted and free to be who they truly are.

Where there is love, differences are embraced and ideas flow.

Where there is love, there are no exclusions.

Where there is love, magical stories are written. Hope is shared. Joy abounds. Peace exists. Light shines. We are bold.

Show love. Be love. Exude love.

Stay magical.

  1. I agree that all types of love are lumped under this one word. In my language there are many words to describe the type and intensity of love. A lovely post K.
