Be Fruity

“By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.”

~ Galatians 5:22-23 (New Revised Standard Version, Updated Edition)

Every time I hear the above passage, I think of a song the little kids used to sing at the church I attended while I was growing up. The refrain went These are the fruits of the Spirit. These are the fruits of the Spirit…. of God!

But I don’t think I have ever reflected on the different “fruits” mentioned until recently. I know I have tried to practice some of them, since love, joy and peace are amongst those listed. And as anyone who has followed this blog for awhile knows, I try my best to exude those as much as I can, sharing them as often as I can.

It is some of the other fruits that I have trouble with, especially patience. I fall short on others at times, like gentleness and self-control. I can be selfish with things I have instead of generous.

Like the grapevine or a fruit-bearing tree, I too have room to grow and time to learn to produce fruit that is good. It’s something I can work on. And while it will never be perfect, I can be as fruity as I possibly can be.

Even if you aren’t a Christian, these tenants are ones that go well with whatever your religious inclinations are, even if your don’t have any at all. All are free. All are disciplines that can be mastered only if one is willing to try. And all are fruitful…. as long as one is willing to find the room to grow.

May we love all.

May we find delight in everything.

May we seek peace.

May we have patience.

May we show kindness.

May we be generous with our gifts and our talents.

May we find something to believe in.

May we we be gentle with everyone, especially ourselves.

May we learn that we can control only ourselves.

Imagine what the world would be like if we each tried to master even just one of these. May we all find room to grow. May we all be fruitful.

Be fruity.

Stay magical.
