It’s a phrase we all say.
IT’S NOT FAIR!
As children, we yell it when we perceive a sibling or classmate is receiving something better than we were given by an adult. It’s not fair we have to do the dishes tonight. It’s not fair that they got the purple marker. It’s not fair that she gets to go first!
As adults, we yell it as well, often when people are shown small acts of mercy or granted things we think we should have instead. A promotion, a pardon, equal rights, the winning lottery ticket, a clean break.
It’s not fair that certain lives matter. It’s not fair that she got that job title when I’ve clearly been here longer. It’s not fair she won.
We believe that if we do good, if we act a certain way, if we believe we can do something, life will be fair and equal for us. And when it doesn’t, we think life is not being fair.
But life isn’t supposed to be fair.
Comparison is the thief of joy. When we measure our successes, our accomplishments, and even our failures against those of others, we ten to suck the life out of what we’ve strived for. We get jealous. We don’t see all the good things we have because we’ve put our blinders on. We can’t see the riches we have always possessed because the grass is suddenly greener on the other side. We’ve twisted what good they have received into bad because we didn’t get what we thought we deserved as well.
There is joy here, in what we have, in what we are willing to extend to others. After all, we’ve all received some sort of mercy. We’ve all been given grace. And we all have our own gifts that we have reaped.
It’s not fair.
But we can make it a little more equal for all by embracing our gifts and not worrying if we have our full slice of an imaginary pie. We can make life fair by rejoicing with those who rejoice without worrying about what that means for us. We can extend the grace and mercy we have received so that magic can flourish and love, peace, joy and hope can prosper.
Because that is what makes life fair for all.
Stay magical.

I love this piece, your closing paragraph the most of all. πππ Nope, life isn’t fair…but who said it was going to be? Imagine how boring and imbalanced this world would be if we all had the same gifts or the same pie? π

A great post K. Life is as fair to us as it is to others but in different ways.

Nice thought Kelly! I agree, life can be unfair, but all we can do is suck it up and deal! not worry about who got what or how they got it! Xx
