Why fit in when you were born to stand out?
~ Dr. Seuss (Theodore Giesel)
I wear a number of bracelets. Currently I have eleven on my wrist (twelve if you count my watchband), though I’ve been known to wear as many as fifteen on that wrist and a few on the other. I also wear things with unicorns or cats a great deal of the time. Like now, when I am wearing my reading cat t-shirt, unicorn compression socks, and sparkly unicorn earrings. while I don’t wear much makeup, often I have something with a shimmer in it.
I don’t stand out too much, but I also don’t make myself blend in. I sparkle.
But it’s not just my attire that sparkles. For over a year and a half, I have tried my best to exude the five themes of the Advent season: love, joy, hope, peace and light. I try to bring a smile to other peoples’ faces, inspire others, and live life to the fullest. I look for the magic in the world and do my best to share that magic with others.
I still have people who try to take my sparkle.
I still have people try to tell me that I am too much for them. They try to knock me down.
But I have learned that no matter what, there are people who just seem to be perpetually unhappy. They can’t stand to see others sparkle because they will not or cannot sparkle. They don’t want to let light and love in, unless it is by their choosing.
I’m not gonna let them try to steal my sparkle.
We live in a world that sometimes seems so unkind, but there are magical moments there too. There are moments that make us all sparkle.
The youth and high school football teams across the country who use their own time and efforts to do yard work or shovel snow from their neighbors’ drives.
It’s the grocery store clerk who points out when someone is wearing something that looks awesome and enjoys making people smile.
It’s the messages out of the blue via email, a text, or a letter that just say “I am thinking of you.”
Kindness. Love. Joy. Peace. Hope. Magic. Light.
We all can find a way to throw all of these around like confetti. Or better yet, like glitter, since not only does it sparkle, but it is hard to get rid of once it is out in the world!
No matter what, find a way to sparkle. Find a way to shine. And ignore those who try to put out your flame. They’re just looking for a reason to hide their own sparkle.
Keep being you in this world.
Stay magical, all.

Thank you!
I do have to remind myself often of this, particularly with some difficult people who wants to see me tone my shine down.
