The best days ever

Today was the last day of the state fair in my swath of the Midwest, and like usual, I chose NOT to go to the fair this year. I’ve only been once in the sixteen years I have lived in this state. It’s too hot, too crowded, and too expensive for me to really enjoy. But that’s not the topic of this post.

The theme of the 2023 Iowa State Fair was “Best Days Ever” because all of the days of the fair are supposed to be something to enjoy. While I did not enjoy them myself, I have a number of friends who did go to the fair and did enjoy all that the fair had to offer. It was how they had fun, just as my idea of fun this very hot late summer day in this swath of the Midwest was to chill in my abode with the air conditioning running, reading a bit of one of the stories on my Kindle, doing some laundry, and doing a spot of writing. Not that I got much of any of that done aside from the laundry. It may not have been productive, but it was a best day ever regardless.

We humans often spend so much time remembering everything that we have to do and trying to get everything done in a day. We work ourselves to the bone because we are viewed as lazy if we aren’t productive. We are seen as less than if our houses aren’t perfect, our lives aren’t perfect, our appearances aren’t perfect. We look for ways to fill every single day with some sort of work because we are seen as less than if we don’t.

We’re afraid to let our hair down and do the non-productive things we want to do because of how we would be viewed. We don’t do all of the things we want because we are afraid of let downs. We question whether it is worth it. We question why we should bother. We’ve learned from the past that it’s a waste of time, a waste of money, a waste of effort. Yet it’s something we desire, be it a nap, a party, a day of cloud gazing, daydreaming, something fun, something unproductive.

But yet, sometimes the best days are the days in which nothing is planned. Those are the days we let our hair down and give in to whatever fancies float our way. Those are the days in which we rest, have fun, be joy, find magic, give love, gain some peace, ever be hopeful that:

“This could possibly be the best day ever! / And the forecast says that tomorrow will likely be a million and six times better / So make every minute count, jump up, jump in, and seize the day, / And let’s make sure that in every single possible way / Today is gonna be a great day!”

~ Bowling For Soup “Today is Gonna Be a Great Day – Theme song to Phineas and Ferb”

The best days are the days we write our stories, the days we find a bit of magic in a moment, the days we learn to find our own voices. Each and every day can be the best day ever. Whether that means saying yes to things we want to do, even if it’s something the past has told us no about, or saying no to toxicity or negativity, we can live our best lives. We can have the best days we can have, just by learning to find that bit of magic within us. And whether that means filling your days with productivity or finding a day in which the most productive thing you do is put on a clean shirt, they all can be the best days ever.

Enjoy all of your best days. They help make even the worst days a bit more bearable.

Stay magical.

  1. Best days ever, are filled with bright glorious sunrise and extra little surprises. Like a gift card in the mail box, or just a card to send I am thinking of you. To going to lunch with a friend. Curled up with a good book. Resting on the patio as the sun sets and the stars shine. Best days ever are around each day. There is Joy even in times of not so good days.

  2. The older I get the more I realize how necessary those ’empty’ days are. Ones where I don’t need to get dressed, leave the house, or have anything at all claiming time out of my day. Where my biggest decision is do I drink my tea or coffee first, or which book do I read next. They truly are the best days, and help me to recharge and renew for the rest of the week when everyone wants a piece of me or my time. 💞
