Routines

Anyone who knows me knows I am a big follower of routines. Something within me is happier when I stick to a certain schedule. And while some deviation from the normal is fine for me, I do certain things on certain days and at certain times.

I can’t do that though when I am on vacation. Routines go out the window when one is traveling. It’s hard to find something that is constant when everything has changed.

Diets change. Road trip nostalgia becomes a must. Gummy bears and surgery foods end up in the cart even though we swear off them otherwise. Diners and restaurants take the place of home cooked meals and food prep. Snacks become a way of life during long drives and it’s not uncommon to eat an entire bag of chips in a day. Though one tries hard to stick to healthier options, sometimes it’s just the way it is when options are limited.

Sleep schedules change too. We intend to sleep in on vacation, but unfamiliar settings, smells and sounds disrupt those objectives. Jet lag and time differences, even opposing family schedules cause issues as well. While eventually, our sleep gets back into a routine, it’s disrupted again as we come home.

The other half and I were on a road trip this weekend, though we are home and settling back into our normality now. I’ve learned to take an extra day after vacation to get back into a routine. There’s laundry to be done, groceries to be bought and stuff that needs to be done. And a routine to try to settle back into, a routine that’s as much a part of my story as all of this writing is.

eventually though, a part of me will crave this disruption to my routine once more. Soon, I’ll pack up the car again and head out of town, traveling, eating junk food, and disrupting my sleep once more. But until then, I’ll become the creature of habit once more, writing these stories, enjoying the moments in the mundane, and living my best life with all of the routines.

Stay magical, friends.

  1. Oh, I’m with you there on the routines! At one job, my coworkers knew exactly where I was in the kitchen by what I had done. I followed basically the same routine every day for the morning tasks. Now my animals know what to expect for the day based on what I’m doing. They know what I’m doing based on what I’m wearing and what things I’m doing to get ready.

Sounds like you’ve carved out your own travel routines as well, as much as you can for the different situations and spaces. I know I have certain things I do/bring/eat when I’m on the road…and on familiar trips, like the one I’m doing today, I travel the same route, stop at the same rest stop, etc. Certain parts of my morning and evening routine are also the same, which builds a sense of normalcy wherever I am.

I hope your trip was fantastic, and the homecoming even better ๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿ’ž

    1. Your animals comment cracked me up. If we’re one minute late on meals and treats, we hear about it from our old girl!! She’s got our routines down pat.

Trip was great, but coming home is even better.

  2. I totally get the routine thing. Though my snack are of yogurt and protein shakes and water. I too know my stops along the way, ones I trust. once I get to my destination, I am one to adopt to the schedule fun or plans that have been made. I usually sleep well on Vacation, though there can be a night or two, I find myself reading a book by KS Wood.
I love to travel, yet getting home and back to my regular routine is comforting. Glad your home! โค๐Ÿก
