True Love

It’s hard to believe that the month of January is already nearly over.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. It’s the season of lovers, romance, chocolate and flowers. Stores and other venues are decorated with pinks, reds and whites and it seems as though love is in the air.

But there are so many out there that are hurting. And they need a dose of true love more now than ever.

But first, a quote….

“Hey! Hello in there! Hey! What’s so important? Whatcha got here that’s worth living for?”

“True….. love…….”

“True love! You heard him. You could not ask for a more noble cause that that.”

“True love is the greatest thing in the world.”

~ Scene between Miracle Max, Dread Pirate Roberts, and Inigo Montoya from the movie “The Princess Bride”

Like Miracle Max said, true love is indeed the greatest thing in the world (except for an MLT, but I won’t spoil that….) But not just romantic lovers can show a true love. Anyone who loves humankind can show a true form of love, if they are willing.

How can we show love?

We can show love by being there for others. We can show love by giving back kindness despite the animosity received. We can show love by learning to be civil towards others. We show love by promoting an exchange of ideas and learning about others without judgement. It’s to embrace others and welcome them, following the tenants of whatever we believe while also respecting that not everyone will believe like we do. And in my own faith, love one another was given as the greatest commandment of all.

In a perfect world, this would work. But I know first hand that we don’t live in a perfect world. This kind of true love is difficult to do, almost nearly impossible. It’s easy to say one will love everyone. But the practice of it is far more difficult that just talking the talk.

Showing true love to everyone means EVERYONE…. And I know I definitely fall short of that. But I strive to do my best every day. I strive to be a better person who shows true love each day. Am I perfect? Heck no! But that’s part of the magic of life. It’s part of the story I am writing…. I have another day to do better, as we all do. And that’s part of trying to love everyone. You can’t do it all in one day. You have to let love let you embody true love.

“Let love make saints out of hypocrites / Let grace fall from broken lips / Turn dirty rags into white flags / Let peace crawl out of the mystery / Show how blinding the light can be /Don’t be afraid of what you see… Love is the protest.”

~ Jars of Clay

So in this season where Valentine’s and love is in the air, embody true love as best as you can. It is magical, it’s part of everyone’s story. And it’s the greatest thing in the world.

Stay magical, friends!
