“When life gets rough, I like to hold on to my dream of relaxing in the summer sun, just lettin’ off steam….Oh, the sky would be blue, and you guys will be there too.”
~ Olaf (Josh Gad) from “Frozen”
At least in the northern hemisphere, today is the first official day of summer. It’s the longest day of the year. From here on out, the days will get shorter and shorter. And of course, since 2013 when Frozen came out, that’s one of the first songs I think of when thinking of summer.
Then of course, there is this song, which I learned to sing long, long ago:
“Summer days drifting away…. To, oh, oh, the summer nights”
~ “Summer Nights,” from the musical Grease
Of course, there also this one, which I sing sometimes too:
“Summer breeze…. Makes me feel fine….. Blowin’ through the jasmine in my mind.”
~ “Summer Breeze” by Seals and Croft
Why do I quote all of these? I do because, just like the hot weather of today here in my little swath of the Midwest, these songs evoke a certain summer feeling within me, no matter what the weather. Plus, in thinking of what to write in this blog post today to celebrate the first day of summer, all three of these songs came to mind.
Thirdly, I like quoting others since I like their ideas. If you haven’t figured that out yet…. then maybe you should read more of my blog posts.
Summer isn’t my favorite season. I’d rather have the coolness of autumn or the chaotic nature of spring or even the cold of winter before summer. There is hot weather, too hot for me to handle at times. There are plenty of bugs to eat me alive. But there are longer days, sometimes too long for me, as I work a set schedule and sometimes even go to bed before the sun sets.
Don’t you fret though – I wrote in another blog post the things I do actually like about summer. Oh hey, look, I’m hinting at reading more of my stuff!
Speaking of reading more of my things, I finally have a video trailer made for my first book in my Portals Series…. It’s only 99 seconds long, so have a look!
Wherever summer takes you this year, I hope it’s magical and worth every moment. I know I will find the magic in the moments of this summer, despite the heat. After all, I continue to write my own story. I pray you continue to do the same.
