The protest remains

This past Sunday was Easter. It sure seems like a long time ago already, even though it’s been only four days. But in a world where everything seems rushed and well, we were watching and waiting to see if an entire civilization was going to be “annihilated,” the message of Easter and “Christ has Risen! He has risen INDEED!” seems kind of saccharine amongst all of the angst.

But maybe we need that sweetness like we need the candy from the Easter baskets and the reminder that life continues to go on.

Anywho.

Reflecting on the crucifixion… it was a rebellion. It was a protest. It was an empire snuffing out a rabble rouser at the behest of religious leaders to keep the status quo. yes, Pontius Pilate DID say there was no Roman charges against Jesus, yet he was executed all the same to keep those in power in that tiny region happy.

There was fear… fear of change. There was fear that they would lose their power. There was fear that “others” were just as worthy of inheriting the “kingdom of heaven” and those in charge couldn’t have that. They were, as Judas Iscariot reminds us in the song “Heaven on Their Minds” from Jesus Christ Superstar, frightened by the crowds that got too loud in this random charge to welcome the outcast and loving everyone as one loves themself.

But the empire, the religious leaders, those who did the oppressing….. they weren’t able to keep the silence they created for very long. The protest… well, it continued well past that Good Friday and even Easter Sunday. It continues to this day.

Light shines brightly.

Hope still renews.

Joy yet exclaims.

Peace continues to roar.

Love perseveres.

This protest was meant to break down walls. This protest welcomes the foreigner with open arms. This protests casts away stones. This protest embraces everyone of every religion, race, creed, orientation with love. This protest loudly proclaims love and joy, peace and patience, kindness and goodness, faith and gentleness and a great deal of self-control.

Hatred continues to try to snuff all of this out. Status Quo expects to remain, never changing. The sanctimonious ones want to continue to gatekeep, shutting out those they deem “different.” Society wants to tarry in normality. Hearts that don’t wish to change persist in hardening. They would rather blow up bridges and build up walls. They would rather keep saying that empathy and compassion are sinful and that one must pull one’s self up by their bootstraps. They want to keep dividing people by the way they look and act. And they do it all while claiming to be following the very person that started all of the rabble in the first place.

But this protest. It remains. And it will continue to do so.

Stay magical, friends.
