Every ordinary day

It’s that time of winter where the holiday season is over. The lights are coming down. The Christmas tree and all of its ornaments have been packed away in boxes in the basement. The Nativity, the scene of so much politicizing this year, is tucked away, forgotten once more. The nights, once full of light and magic, are lackluster and dark. And the days, which were full of promises of peace on earth, goodwill to all men, joy to the world and love…. well, they are ordinary once again.

Or so they seem.

It does feel like kind of a letdown putting away the decorations. My front room seems a little less festive without the tree. The windows are bare without the lights, magically shining out into the darkness. Life goes on, bleak and wintry even as the days grow longer.

Yet, these every ordinary days are full of promise. They have a bit of the magic of the Christmas season still attached to them. There is light to be found. There are promises of peace, even as the news brings turmoil. There is hope despite the despair. There is love, ever shining through the hatred and divisions. There are joys, small bubbles of elation that brighten moments. We just have to look a bit harder to find them.

The first two weeks of January have already been a bit hard. There is anger and hate, cries of anguish and despair and even a great deal of things that divide us. We are bombarded with atrocities and things that make us feel helpless.. It seems these ordinary days are heavier.

But the joy still abounds.

The hope is still there.

The peace can be found again.

And love…. we have to let it shine out even more.

Every ordinary day can be extraordinary if we let it.

Stay magical, friends.
