Noise drowns out love?

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.”

~1 Corinthians 13:1 (NIV version)

The world today is a noisy place. Everywhere we look, there are words of hate and rhetoric being thrown about. People are being marginalized and fingers are being pointed. And instead of finding ways to work together and try to solve this mess, the divisions feel like they are widening.

It feels like it is becoming a world where if you aren’t for us, you must be against us. And before anyone comes at me, I have seen that mentality coming from both sides of the spectrum.

It feels as though love for our fellow person is all gone.

But it is still there. It is in the words of those who work to keep people from being marginalized. It’s in those speaking out against persecution and arguing for commonality instead of divisions. It’s the one learning another language so someone else can feel seen. It’s in the card that is sent to let someone know they are thought about. It’s the person trying to make things right. It’s in the protests and the silence and the hope that soon change will come. It lingers, reminding us that it is still there.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

~ 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV version)

But how do we make love drown out the noise of hate? How do we become more than a noisy gong, a clashing cymbal, a harsh brass instrument? How do we show the world that hate cannot win, that love is still there, ever shining in the magic, ever being hopeful, ever coinciding with peace, ever joyful?

How do we keep it the protest?

“Let love make saints out of hypocrites / Let grace fall from broken lips / Turn dirty rags into white flags / Let peace crawl out of the mystery / Show how blinding the light can be / Don’t be afraid of what you see.”

~ Jars of Clay “Love is the Protest”

How do we let love become louder than hate? How do we change the tide?

I wish I had the answers.

All I know is that I will continue to show the love I can show. I will continue to embrace the magic. I will continue to find adventure to inspire others, learn languages to help others be heard, send my cards to let them know they are seen, and continue to work on becoming a better person myself so that I can reach out to help those around me. I will continue to try to show light and peace, hope and joy. I will not let hate win, nor injustices keep me from fighting to show the love I have for others and I will make damn sure that everyone knows that even if I am not for something, I am not against those who are for it. And I will continue to write this story so that I stand with those who cannot stand, letting them know they are seen and heard even as hate tries to drown out their voices. For while love seems to be silent, perhaps it is too loud for us to even hear. And that there could be the most magical thing of all.

Stay magical, friends.
