I like to hike. And while I often revisit the familiar, I also like to explore places in my little swath of the Midwest that are new to me. But sometimes, the paths meander and I get lost, like we all do. I find I have to retrace my steps and find the correct trail. And sometimes, it gets confusing. But eventually, these new trails become old friends that I revisit. And eventually, I get to where I need to be.
But there is adventure along the way nevertheless.
Faith works like that too.
Sometimes, we traverse the old paths, the familiar traditions, the ways others blazed for us. We learn the songs and the words that have been there “all along” without even thinking about just how long those traditions have stood.
But then, there are times we have to stumble along, learning the route as we go. We trip up. We make mistakes. We desire to blaze a new path and see where the adventure will take us. We write a new story instead of just following the old. We deconstruct what we know and create something entirely new.
Maybe the trails crisscross and you think you’re along the correct path. Or maybe you aren’t on a path at all, but rather something entirely new, terrifyingly different yet exhilarating all the same.
Or perhaps you learn that the old path can be the true one for you. You find it again, noting the nuances that may have always been there, but yet… there’s new details along the trail, ones you may not have noticed before. The adventure is there, the story is there…. but there is room for growth as well.
No matter whether we decided to traverse the same paths, find a new one that someone else has done, or become a trailblazer in our own right, we continue to trek along. The magic is in finding that no matter what trails we choose, there’s magic in the story. There’s light and peace and hope and joy and love in that faith. But we have to be willing to look up and notice it.
Find your own path in life. Find faith in something.
Write your own story.
Stay magical, friends.
