Empathy is a sin

Apparently, having empathy and compassion are now sins, at least according to some of the algorithms of my various social media feeds. They have become buzz words embroiled in this political idea of “wokeness.” They are ideas that many seem to recoil from, given that they aren’t correct words to have in the political climate of American society.

But why have these ideas become so political? Why is showing others come compassion and empathy seen as something weak and snowflake-like? Why is learning the stories of others and treating everyone as one would wish to be treated become an idea that is so vilified these days? Why have empathy and compassion become, as one prominent figure has said, the fundamental weaknesses of the western world?

We don’t have to embrace the actions of everyone we meet, but we must learn to understand the stories of those we walk with. But to do that, we must first show them empathy. We must have compassion for the poor, the stranger, the marginalized. We must be able to listen, like this person did:

Empathy may be a sin in the eyes of some, but if it is, sin boldly. Be compassionate. Find ways to reach out, even if it is deemed something one side of the political spectrum or another deem as weak and snowflake-y. Continue to be the magical ones, the compassionate ones, the empathetic ones who make the world shine brighter and write the stories for another generation.

Shine bright, dear friends.

Stay magical.

Write your own stories.
