I love to write stories. I also love to decorate for the holidays. And now that I have my OWN little abode, I have the ability to go all out.
I also will be in the process of turning my childhood dresser into a credenza to showcase my wonderful little villages (that’s a summer project though!). I currently have three of them I put out yearly…. One is my Halloween Town, which gets put out in mid-September and taken down after Halloween. Then there is my Christmas village, which I have named Hays-Wayfare. It gets put up after (American) Thanksgiving and taken down after Epiphany. Then there is my fairy village, which gets put up around the first weekend of March and sometimes isn’t taken down until June.
All of these are a mish mash of different buildings and items that make my villages unique. And every year, I keep an eye out for pieces to add to any of the villages.
In 2021, I wrote some stories about my Halloween Town that were a big hit, and have written another tale or two as I add pieces to the village. In 2022, I did the same thing for my Christmas village. (All of those stories can be found by clicking this link.)
This year, I finally am writing a series of stories about my fairy village, since today is Saint Patrick’s Day. It’s not as grand as the other two…. yet. But I am building it year by year. So here goes…….

In a small corner of an unassuming meadow resides a mound with an unassuming door in it. A sign, only visible when the sunlight dances upon it as the trees wave in the breeze states a simple “Welcome, Fairy Garden….” But to open the door and cross the threshold, one must be young at heart, no matter how old in years they may be.
This is the Fairy Garden. It is here that wonderous delights greet the senses. It is here where the fae frolic and the gnomes cultivate the wonders of the earth. It is here where the last unicorns roam.
Speaking of unicorns….
As one crosses the threshold into the world of the magical, one finds a few of them living amongst the valleys.

Near the old wizened tree in a grove in the valley, the unicorns take refuge, watching the outside world from their pool of reflection. It was they who sent Twyla to protect the witches of Witch Hill and the rest of Halloweentown from the zombie attack. It was they who wondered how Humphreys would be able to help her, knowing the magic he had. Every Halloween, they wondered that.
But it wasn’t Halloween yet, so they had time. Today was Saint Patrick’s Day, the day of the fae, and the unicorns were instead focusing on taking a break and letting the magic of the land they lived in rejuvenate and restore them.
The old wizened tree awakened that day.
“Happy Day of the fae, my friends!” he exclaimed.
Golda smiled at him as Maylill and Primzin watched on, eating the sweet grasses that grew at the pool’s edge.
“Happy day of the fae to you too, old friend!” she exclaimed.

Meanwhile, just a short journey away, Henry the gnome has set up his campground. Like all gnomes, who have the ability to slip in and out of the human world, Henry picked up a few habits from the humans that followed him back into the fae world. Like his nephews, Sherman, Montgomery, Archibald and Humphreys, he was raised in the human world in Sleepy Town in one of the gardens on Country Lane, but he much preferred his little campsite in the Fairy Garden. Here was magic. Here was solitude. Here was a chance to play his flute by the fire.

Just a stone’s throw away, in a home carved out of a hill, lived Clyde. He also spent a part of his lifetime popping in and out of the human world and also enjoyed his solitude. But he also enjoyed sitting on his front porch and listening to the sweet melodies of Henry’s flute. If anyone came by, be it fae, gnome, unicorn or one of the young-at-heart humans, Clyde would give a friendly wave. He enjoyed his solitude, but he was also amiable as he could be…..
But this is just one little corner of the huge garden in which magic lived. Stay tuned for another episode of this wonderful story… coming soon!
